NCFA Canada Crowdfunding Ambassadors

Crowdfunding Ambassadors (CFAs) are leaders, educators, supporters and advocates of an inclusive and broad-based crowdfunding industry in communities across Canada. They are circles of influence and ‘go to resources’ for small businesses, organizations and investors to connect with, share and learn about crowdfunding via locally hosted events and initiatives. CFAs are specialists and plugged into an international network of shared resources, thought leadership, and industry professionals striving to cultivate and shape the future of crowdfunding in Canada and beyond.

During his 25-year business career, he has held senior executive positions in the high-tech, environmental and manufacturing industries ranging from General Manager, COO to CFO for public and private companies. Ed has managed numerous operations of up to 150 employees ranging from capital goods manufacturing to software applications. He has completed over $500 million of business transactions ranging from major sales initiatives, technology licensing, JV’s, debt & equity financings, and M&A transactions. Ed has also started several high-tech companies and subsequently divested them to larger entities. He is a business strategist that has consistently taken businesses to the next level. Ed has developed a series of strategic processes to address the fundamental needs of attracting new customers, increasing transactions, not competing on price, decreasing costs, and raising capital for business owners. He is Certified Management Accountant and Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA/CMA) designation and received a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting & Finance, including the MBA Finance Seminar, from Dalhousie University.

Crowdfunding web portals should have been with us long ago. If you think about how logical and sensible the format is; experienced financial advisors vetting ventures or social projects to ensure that good corporate governance is being maintained. These vetted projects are then listed on a platform for all to see and participate, not just a chosen few. Ultimately, individuals make an investment decision for an amount that will not jeopardize their personal financial well-being.

“Ed brings years of financial, accounting and compliance experience gained from a wide range of corporate transactions to the NCFA Ambassadors program bench. His ‘boots on the ground’ approach to education and assisting clients raise the capital they need is most welcome and will have an immediate impact on emerging market opportunities", said Craig Asano, Executive Director, NCFA Canada.

There are other important social trends with crowdfunding. Traditional methods of financing a junior company largely rely on the personal network of the individuals involved to gain support, akin to “who do you know”. However, many entrepreneurs are severely limited from not being well connected. The power of web-based platforms for crowdfunding is addressing these barriers. Similarly, when considering gender barriers, women have been 13% more likely to successfully raise funds on Kickstarter than men are.

I personally am very intrigued by where this new funding mechanism will take the financial industry. I am confident that it will be a major disruptive event due to its powerful combination of social media and collaborative technologies. Consequently, I am delighted to be an Ambassador of the NCFA Canada and help business owners and entrepreneurs, and socially guide individuals down this journey to obtain the funding they need", said Ed Corbett, Corporate Executive, CPA/CMA
